Historically, scriptoriums were the heart of Benedictine monastic life where monks and nuns preserved and shared knowledge. Contemporary scriptoriums re-present these spaces for academic communities to foster environments of spiritual and intellectual flourishing.
Hart Scriptorium is open to all and exists to provide Bay Area academic communities with spaces for contemplative communal silence, where creativity and academic excellence can flourish.
In an increasingly noisy world, it is more important than ever for academic communities to have access to spaces intentionally shaped by practices of communal silence and prayer. A growing body of research highlights the effects of noise pollution on learning, concentration, and even physical health. Through contemplative writing retreats and other resources, Hart Scriptorium fosters oases of peace where students and scholars can deepen their creativity, strengthen their academic work, and cultivate greater well-being. In turn, participants are equipped to share the peace they have cultivated with their campuses, local communities, and the wider world.
As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. (Psalm 42:1)
